Ontology Metadata
Gómez-Pérez suggests ontology evaluation should be split into ontology verification, ontology validation and ontology assesment. The criteria she suggests include consistency, completeness, conciseness, expandability and sensitiveness.
Validation and verification should occur during ontology development, as it is ontology assesment, which would occur after an ontology is published, that is of most interest.
Existing Problems:
- Ontologies need canonical names. How can an ontology be located? It
will often be in multiple locations, stored as multiple versions, etc.
There should be something similar to LDAP or DNS to allow ontologies to
be located via canonical names.
- Ontology evaluation needs metrics, as using natural language to evaluate ontologies can be cumbersome and potentially ambiguous.
